B-to-B Twitter 101: How to Get Your Company Started on Twitter

B-to-B TwitterBlogging and social media are a big part of today’s daunting new marketing world. That’s why more B-to-B companies are adding the microblogging site Twitter to their marketing strategies. Whether you’re looking to generate new sales leads or get more business from your current customers, a B-to-B Twitter account can help you reach your marketing goals and objectives.

According to a 2010 study by Edison Research, more than half of active Twitter users follow companies, brands or products on social networks, 79% of US Twitter users are more likely to recommend brands they follow and 67% of US Twitter users are more likely to buy from brands they follow.

With stats like these, it’s easy to see why so many companies are flocking to Twitter. It’s also why we’ve created a four-part blog series to help you build an effective B-to-B Twitter presence for your company. You can read the rest of the series here during the next three weeks – or subscribe to our blog to get the rest of the series delivered straight to your inbox.

Creating a Twitter Profile
If you are new to Twitter, you’ll need to begin by creating a company profile. To do this, complete the Full name, Email and Password fields on the home page and click Sign up for Twitter. When Twitter prompts you to Choose Your Username, be sure to use one that matches your company’s other social networks.

B-to-B Twitter 101 Next, you’ll want to complete your profile so that it will have the same “look and feel” as your other marketing materials. To do this, select the Edit Profile option, then:

  • Upload your company’s logo as your Photo.
  • Type your company’s Name.
  • Type your company’s website URL.
  • Type a 140-character Bio about your company.
  • Click Save Changes.

You can also dress up your profile by adding a 520 x 260 pixel Header image that highlights your company – or its locations, products or employees.

The final step in creating a Profile is Design. You’ll want to upload a customized Background Image with your company’s branding elements and use colors from your company’s color palette as your Background Color and Link Color. Then just click Save Changes and your profile will be complete.

Now that you’ve set up your company’s profile, you’ll need to find people who are interested in the information that your company posts on Twitter. We will talk more about this in next week’s blog post on building an audience.

Did you switch up the look of the site? I like the look. I see you changed the comment plugin. I think this will be a good choice. I think Disqus makes it more difficult to comment (unless you are a regular user).

I think you made some great points in this post. The most important being changing the look of your business Twitter account. Although I do not see it too often, there still have been many times that I’ve seen people using a default look for their Twitter. That will definitely limit you in the long run, and if you use Twitter for business, you definitely need to set yourself apart and create a look and feel that is entirely your own.

    Great post, Eileen!

Thanks Kathy! Twitter is actually my favorite social network (even though Facebook is still our biggest traffic generator).

Great info about Twitter. I have a personal profile. Do you really think it is necessary to have a business account on twitter when you are the business?

If you are posting both personal and business tweets, it would be best to have a separate account for your business. If you decide to keep the personal profile though, you can use tips in this post to give your Twitter profile the same “look and feel” as your blog and Facebook business page to present a consistent brand across your online presence. Hope this helps!
